Impact value test

Toughness, when used physically, refers to a material's ability to withstand impact.

The aggregates are subjected to impact as a result of vehicle movement on the road, which causes them to fragment into smaller pieces. As a result, the aggregates ought to be robust enough to withstand impact-related disintegration. Impact value testing is used to gauge these qualities.

The aggregate impact value serves as a benchmark for assessing a material's resistance to abrupt shock or impact, which can be different from that material's resistance to progressively applied compressive pressure.

Uses of the test:

  1. To calculate the impact value of the aggregates used to build pavement (Road)
  2. To evaluate their feasibility for the construction of road layers (base course, surface course) based on impact value.
