Impact value test
Toughness, when used physically, refers to a material's ability to withstand impact.
The aggregates are subjected to impact as a result of vehicle movement on the road, which causes them to fragment into smaller pieces. As a result, the aggregates ought to be robust enough to withstand impact-related disintegration. Impact value testing is used to gauge these qualities.
The aggregate impact value serves as a benchmark for assessing a material's resistance to abrupt shock or impact, which can be different from that material's resistance to progressively applied compressive pressure.
Uses of the test:
- To calculate the impact value of the aggregates used to build pavement (Road)
- To evaluate their feasibility for the construction of road layers (base course, surface course) based on impact value.
