Aggregate Crushing Value Test

The aggregate crushing value test on coarse aggregates provides a relative assessment of an aggregate's resistance to crushing under progressively applied compressive stress. The coarse aggregate crushing value is the percentage by weight of crushed material achieved by subjecting test aggregates to a particular load under defined circumstances. Aggregate crushing value is a numerical measure of aggregate strength that is used in the construction of roads and pavements. Aggregates' crushing value reflects their strength. Lower crushing values are preferred for roads and pavements because they indicate a lower crushed fraction under load, resulting in a longer service life and more economical performance. The aggregates used to build roads and pavements must be durable enough to resist crushing from vehicles and rollers. The result could be anomalous if the aggregate crushing value is 30 or above, in which case the value for the ten percent penalty should be established.
